Twenty-four centuries, at ease with themselves

Long before it lent its light to travel pages, Hvar was Pharos — founded by Greek settlers in 384 BC. Their drystone field walls still divide the Stari Grad Plain exactly as they did twenty-four centuries ago; UNESCO guards the pattern today.
Venetian fleets wintered in Hvar's harbour. In 1612 its citizens opened the first public theatre in Europe — nobles and fishermen under one roof. By 1868, the island was formally welcoming travellers to its mild winters, making Hvar one of the birthplaces of European tourism.
Today superyachts share the horizon with fishing boats, and beach clubs with lavender harvests. Pomalo exists to hold that balance — and to open the island's finest doors, at island pace.
384 BC
Greek settlers from Paros found Pharos — today's Stari Grad, among the oldest towns in Europe.
1612
Hvar opens the first public communal theatre in Europe — nobles and fishermen under one roof.
1868
The Hvar Hygienic Society is founded; organised tourism in Europe begins on this island.
2008
The Stari Grad Plain is inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage — its Greek field pattern untouched.

Europe's sunniest island — 2,700 hours of light a year, lavender in June, pomalo always.
