East of Stari Grad
In 384 BC settlers from Paros laid out this plain in rectangles, bounded by dry-stone walls, roads running lengthways and across. The pattern is still the one they left. Vines and olives occupy the plots; lavender, almonds, figs and carob among them. It is a working field, not a park. Walk the lanes in the morning, when the stone is cool and the air has not yet risen.
